My Secret Weapon For Producing Web Videos Fast

November 9, 2009 by Brian · Leave a Comment

I’ve been in video production since 1986.

Back then video equipment was BIG, heavy and hard to work with. The JVC cameras weighed 20 – 30 lbs. Just the battery was 8 lbs. Then you had to cary a record deck that also weighed 30 lbs. the cable that connected the camera to the record deck was about 8 lbs. The 3/4 inch pro video cassettes were big and clunky, too.

Even with all of this heavy equipment, we were still able to produce some good, professional corporate video for clients all of the East Coast. Back then, my dream was to do 3-D computer animation. I tried to convice our company to invest in a 3-D workstation… cost was only $500,000.

Today, you can produce amazingly good video with a home video camera and some basic editing software that comes standard on PC’s and Mac’s.

My secret weapon is the  Flip video cam. This great little gadget has changed the video industry forever. I bought one for my wife as a Christmas present but I  ended up with it. Funny how that worked out.

The Flip is probably the easiest to use video camera on the  market today. It only has 2 buttons you need to worry about… the on button and the record button. It doesn’t get any simpler. Turn it on, point at your victim and press the big red record button. You’re in business.

When you’re done, press the red button again to stop recording. Flip out the built-in USB connector on the side, plug the camera into your computer and download for editing or uploading to Youtube. Super fast, super easy. Anyone can do it… everyone IS doing it.

I taught a class on how to use the Flip for producing your own video blog or to drive traffic to your web site back in the Summer. Mickey Johnson of Fox 21 / 27 attended and took notes. Thirty minutes after the class, he’s calling me from Best Buy asking which model Flip camera he should get. He bought three over the next several weeks and hasn’t looked back.

Since then, Mickey has shot nearly 200 short video clips that he has uploaded to YouTube. His videos have gone viral and his efforts have made him a local celebrity. You can see how Mickey is using the Flip at his video blog site called www.mickspick.com.

It can even be used to produce a web show worth millions of dollars. To find out how, I recommend that you get and read CRUSH IT! by Gary Vaynerchuk of WineLibraryTV.com fame. He uses a flip to produce his video blog even though he has high-end video equipment  worth thousands of dollars.

So, here’s my recommendation: Go get a Flip Video Camcorder right now. They come in standard definition and high definition. HD models are more expensive. I use a standard def model. They also come with 30 minute, 1 hour and 2 hour record space on their built-in memory.

Get one and start recording. My motto is “Fast is Better Than Good.” Don’t worry about making your first videos perfect. Just shoot them. You’ll get better as you go.
